In a style reminiscent of the classic Tintin stories, here are the adventures of Blake and Mortimer, a secret agent and a scientist caught in a cold war gone hot. "The Secret of the Swordfish" is their first adventure, initially serialized in a periodical and later rolled up into a set of three graphic novels. Part 1 has our heroes escaping a dastardly attack by the Yellow Empire. Closely pursued by their arch-foe, Colonel Olrik, the two men try to fly to a secret rendezvous point somewhere in the Middle East. Around every corner is a new threat and a fresh challenge.The story is a mishmash of Second World War and Cold War themes, with appropriate technology. The characters are a little dated, and the plot deals in lots of period stereotypes, but it's a fun read. Well recommended to fans of the original Tintin stories.

Finally, after putting out other Blake and Mortimer stories out of order, Cinebooks is doing the first Blake and Mortimer story in the usually 3-part format. Yes, this is really #1, not #15. And its a 3-parter, so best to have the other 2 albums."Secret of the Swordfish" is set in 1946/49 (not totally clear), but one that is different from our history. If you've read the other albums, you may have seen hints of this story.In it, just after WWII, it seems that the world is posed on the brink of another war, this from the Yellow Empire based in Tibet! Under the control of a military dictator, the Yellow Empire has been preparing for war! But some of the free nations are not sitting around ideally. There has been a "cold war" going on for 3 years. In England, they are working on a secret weapon, the Swordfish. This is being lead by Professor Mortimer. Captain Blake is heading up security.But then, a new war breaks out, when the Yellow Empire sends missiles against the world capitals!! (needless to say, the follow-on albums make NO mention of this destruction). This is followed by a blitzkrieg attack by the armies of the Yellow Empire, and it seems most nations fall. (its not clear who is still free, as we see most of the major european powers as well as america seemingly conquered).But Blake and Mortimer get out of England on their way to a secret English base in the Middle East to complete the secret weapon. They are pursued by Col. Olrik, an Eastern European who is the head of security for the Yellow Empire. This is the first meeting of these 3, as Olrik will be a persistent threat to B&M thru most of the series.The story continues in the next album as they evade capture.

When you open the book and flip the pages, you can smell a foul odor. It might be the printing ink. I have ordered another Blake & Mortimer from another vendor and it reeks also.
